Southwest Turkey Burgers

Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1 tbsp lime zest
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 small jalapeno pepper seeds removed and finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 medium egg
  • 1/4 cup whole wheat breadcrumbs

Optional

  • 4 burger buns
  • 1 cup guacamole
  • 1 medium tomato sliced
  • 1/2 medium red onion sliced

Instructions
 

  • In a large bowl add ground turkey, lime zest, chili powder, ground cumin oregano, salt, pepper, jalapeno, garlic, egg, and breadcrumbs. Mix well with a spoon or hands. Do not overmix.
  • Form into 4 burgers, pressing together as firmly as you can. The mixture will be soft and slightly sticky.
  • To fry: heat 1-2 tbsp olive oil in a large 12-inch frying pan over medium heat. Cook burgers for 4-5 minutes per side, until an internal temperature of 165 degrees F is reached.
  • To grill: Heat grill to 450 degrees F. Carefully place the burgers on the grill and cook for 4 minutes per side. Remove from grill, cover with foil, and let rest for 5 minutes until an internal temperature of 165 degrees F is reached.
  • Serve burger on a bun or bed of lettuce. Top with guacamole, tomato slices, onion slices. Enjoy!
